Jima monoxyla chair (Oromia region, Ethiopia)
The kingdom of Jima (or Jimma) had always maintained a certain autonomy within the Abyssinian empire, and the accession to the throne of the Sufi Muslim Abba Jifar at the end of the 19th century confirmed this desire for independence.
Enriched by his famous coffee production, Abba Jifar recruited an army, built palaces and surrounded himself with craftsmen who conceived his own style of furniture (the Jima style), characterized by the robust, abstract and usually monoxyla appearance of chairs, armchairs or tables.
Jima has long been a province of Ethiopia, but its craftsmen and carpenters still know the secrets of Abba Jifar with which they are able to transform a simple log into a unique sculpture that is also comfortable.
